Bay Ridge Turned 160 Today

The Birth of Bay Ridge

According to the Bay Ridge Historical Society, residents of Yellow Hook in the town of New Utrecht assembled at District School No. 2 on this day in 1853 and voted to rename their village, founded in 1675, “Bay Ridge.”

They sought to escape the association between the name "Yellow Hook" and yellow fever, of which there had been numerous outbreaks in the area.

BRHS Shows the Samuel Winter Thomas Collection

A good turnout for the annual viewing of the Samuel Winter Thomas collection at this month's meeting of the Bay Ridge Historical Society at the Community Room at Shore Hill.

Thomas, a cigar manufacturer who moved to Bay Ridge in 1864 and for 50 years lived in a big wood-framed house on 75th Street and 3rd Avenue, was an avid amateur photographer who chronicled the neighborhood's transition

Gounardes to Head Bay Ridge Historical Society

At a recent annual meeting, the Bay Ridge Historical Society elected local lawyer and civic activist Andrew Gounardes president of the organization.

In a Brooklyn Daily Eagle interview, Gounardes said he was excited to lead an organization that does such great work and has become such a part of the community.

During his first term, he said, he wants to make Bay Ridge history come alive
